The Success of The Cool Girls Program

Creating a program to combat teen pregnancy, drop out rates, and other symptoms that arise from impoverishment and low self image, The Cools Girls program, founded by Dawn Smith and the girls of the East Lake Community, has effected significant lowering of teen pregnancy rates and a non-truant reality in the areas where young women enjoy program mentors.

How's that for activism?
The youth flourish with guidance and attention. This program proves that. It also affects young men beneficially as young women with high self-image, will influence young men in their environment to reach higher as well.

The organization even publishes their revenue and expenditures online. Gotta love the transparency. Other organizations and our own government can take example, as Cool Girls is not in debt or needing to hide anything about their practices.

VERY inspiring.

Cools Girls Describes themselves this way:

Our programs instill the tools necessary for Cool Girls participants to achieve productive futures - confidence, motivation, and good decision-making skills. To this end, we strive to ensure that each Cool Girls graduate:

  • Believes she can do well academically and is motivated to do so.
  • Delays sexual intercourse and uses safe, responsible practices if she becomes sexually active.
  • Practices good health, in particular avoiding substance abuse.
  • Develops a set of specific skills that will enhance her education and employability.
  • Is able to identify when she needs resources and support and knows how to access them.

We are able to do this through our five after-school and out-of-school program components - Cool Girls Club, Cool Scholars, Cool Tech, Cool Biz and Girls LEAD, and Cool Sisters. Each program builds upon the other, playing a critical role in the development of our program participants. The Cool Girls

Isn't this fantastic?
This is exactly what we need to be implementing everywhere. There's always hope. Programs like this are great examples of what can be achieved despite appearances that things can seem too far gone in this world at times.

Shine on
